Soil Engineering and Testing in the Greater Toronto Area

Dependable field and laboratory soil engineering services

Soil Engineering

Our soil engineering services provide the technical foundation required for safe, durable, and cost-effective construction. Every project begins with an understanding of subsurface conditions, soil behaviour, and how those conditions interact with proposed structures, pavements, and infrastructure. In the Greater Toronto Area, soil conditions can vary significantly over short distances, making professional evaluation essential.

We conduct geotechnical assessments to determine soil classification, bearing capacity, compressibility, drainage characteristics, and frost susceptibility. These evaluations help inform the design of foundation, slab construction, retaining structures, pavements, and earthworks. Our recommendations are based on recognized Canadian standards and align with the Ontario Building Code (OBC), ensuring regulatory compliance and practical constructability.

Subsurface investigations are a key component of effective soil engineering and typically include drilled borings to assess soil stratigraphy, subsoil and groundwater conditions. During drilling, Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) is performed as per ASTM D1586 to evaluate the relative density and consistency of subsoils to provide valuable insight into bearing capacity and settlement behaviour. Soil samples recovered from borings are characterized and tested in accordance with Canadian standards and used to develop engineering recommendations for foundations, slabs, and earthworks. This information allows potential construction risks to be identified early and ensures that designs are aligned with site-specific conditions and the requirements of the Ontario Building Code.

Field Inspection

Field inspection is a critical component of quality assurance during construction, ensuring that work is carried out in accordance with engineering recommendations, project specifications, and applicable codes. Our field services focus on verifying that soil and fill materials are placed, compacted, and tested correctly throughout the construction process.

One of the most common field services we provide is density testing using a nuclear density gauge, often referred to as compaction testing. This method allows for rapid, non-destructive measurement of in-place soil density and moisture content. Test results are compared against laboratory Proctor values to confirm that compaction meets specified percentages, typically as required by project documents and the Ontario Building Code.

Compaction testing is commonly performed for floor slabs, backfill around foundations, trenches, and pavement structures. Proper compaction reduces the risk of settlement, cracking, and long-term performance issues. Our technicians are trained to perform nuclear density gauge testing in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Safety regulations and industry standards.

In addition to density testing, we provide inspection services of foundation excavations. We document soil conditions encountered on site and confirm allowable soil bearing pressure and that unsuitable materials are removed. Clear communication with contractors allows issues to be addressed promptly, minimizing delays and rework.

Field inspection services provide owners and design professionals with confidence that construction is proceeding as intended. Our detailed reporting and responsive site presence help ensure compliance with engineering requirements while supporting efficient project delivery across the Greater Toronto Area and Southern Ontario.

Laboratory Analysis

Laboratory analysis provides the data needed to support sound engineering decisions and effective construction quality control. Our soil testing laboratory performs a range of standardized tests to characterize soil properties and establish performance criteria in accordance with Canadian and Ontario standards.

Proctor analysis is a cornerstone of laboratory soil testing. Standard and modified Proctor tests are used to determine the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of soils. These results are essential for specifying compaction requirements and evaluating field density test results obtained using nuclear density gauges.

We also perform grain size analysis, Atterberg limits, moisture content determination, and soil classification testing. These tests help identify soil type, plasticity, and suitability for use as structural fill or subgrade material. Understanding these properties is especially important in the Greater Toronto Area, where clay-rich soils, silts, and fill materials are commonly encountered.

J.T. Donald Consultants Limited also provides on-site and excess soil management services to ensure compliance with with Ontario Regulation 406/19.

Laboratory testing supports compliance with the Ontario Building Code, CSA standards, Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Parks and Conservation regulations, and municipal requirements. Results are clearly reported and integrated into engineering recommendations or construction monitoring programs. When combined with field inspection data, laboratory analysis provides a complete picture of soil behavior and construction quality.

Our laboratory services are designed to support both pre-construction investigations and ongoing construction testing. Fast turnaround times and clear communication ensure that testing results are available when decisions need to be made, helping keep projects moving efficiently while maintaining technical integrity.
